Her first poem was published in a mothering magazine, and rightafter that, she said, she was encouraged to join another, moreserious writing group, this one with all published writers.Goldblatt said she brought in a chapter a week, receivingencouragement and criticism, until once again she was persuaded tosubmit the first chapter of her manuscript to a contest at theSociety of Children’s Writers and Illustrators yearly conference inLos Angeles. “But a couple of years ago, a friend inmy writing group said I needed to make a plan and pick something topublish.” Retiring from teaching after her daughter was born six yearsago, Goldblatt said she eventually returned to writing, but thistime with more of an eye to getting her work published. ![]()
